Real Estate Gastown Buying in Gastown

With the demand for new homes in Vancouver continuing its steady rise, developers are moving into all areas of the city to create new homes and housing communities for the current and potential residents of Vancouver. One area in particular of Vancouver that has been receiving more and more attention in the past few years has been Gastown.

Once the main centre of Vancouver, Gastown is now is on its way up again, emerging as one of the hottest places to buy a new loft or condo in downtown Vancouver.

One place that will finally be put to use is the old Woodward's building. After triumphing over much adversity and many plan changes both in 1995 when local residents managed to bring the initial redevelopment plan to a grinding halt as well as in 2002 with the Woodward’s squat, it seems that an agreement has been reached and plans for a multi-service building are well underway. All of this has been decided by a team comprised of the project team of Henriquez Partners Architects and Westbank Projects/Peterson Investment Group, planners with the city of Vancouver, and affordable housing representatives as well as local residents and stakeholders from within the community.

In the end, the Woodward’s building will have one million square feet of building area to house the 500 market and 200 non-market residential units, community non-profit space, Simon Fraser’s School for the Contemporary Arts, as well as retail space. Although the original plan was to keep the 1903 building structure, it has since been decided that it would be more beneficial and practical to restore the Woodward’s building to it’s 1956 glory, when Woodward’s was the leading retailer in Vancouver. The new Woodward’s area is being designed to be practical and accessible to everyone in the area with the retail space going to a supermarket as well as a drug store and other basic amenities that will be needed by the residents.

Another company that is realizing the potential of Gastown is the Salient Group. Lead by CEO Robert Fung, the Salient Group is responsible for many of the new condominium developments appearing throughout Gastown such as the Taylor Building and Terminus and has more plans for the future including Gaoler’s Mews, Alhambra, Cordage and Garage. The Salient Group prides itself on creating realistic and convenient communities in urban environments to offer a place where people can work, play and live thus cutting out the commute that so many are involved in on a daily basis. As Gastown has so much to offer people of all ages and walks of life, it is an ideal place to create these beautiful new homes.

Increased housing and amenities in Gastown will serve to further highlight this beautiful area of Vancouver and allow more to work, play and live in what was once the place to be downtown. As Gastown continues to emerge as a desirable place to live once again, many changes will be taking place, but the original charm and history of Gastown will remain untouched for all to continue to enjoy in the future.
